When 8,888 Kitsune enter the Oni world on the Ethereum blockchain, they will be accompanied by the Oni themselves. Artist Lance Webb and Big Head Club's Mack Flavelle (of Cryptokitties and NBA Top Shot fame) collaborated to design the Oni Ronin that comes with each Kitsune.
Oni Ronin has companion spirits known as Kitsune. They look like regular foxes outside the Oni Realm, but once inside, their true nature is revealed. It has been theorized that Kitsune are made up of inexplicable materials originating from all corners of the universe. Each Oni Ronin is sent out with a dying poem penned by a genuine samurai, and they each get an opportunity to start the trial of ascension and make a commitment to their Ronin: If they lose to their Oni, they are annihilated forever, their NFT incinerated and replaced by a husk shattered in cosmic conflict, their death poetry reverberating for all time. After vanquishing an Oni, a Ronin's mortal remains are burnt, and he or she is elevated to the ranks of the noble Samurai, becoming one of the 88 Golden Ronin.
